The International Groups are constituted by the National Secretariats recognised by their respective Episcopal Conferences at regional, continental or linguistic level, and approved by the OMCC.
In the process of global expansion of the Cursillo Movement in the 60's, the need for connection and coordination between National Secretariats became apparent. International encounters of various kinds were held in different times and places. These international encounters gave rise to the CM International Groups.
The formation of an International Group was first discussed at the First Latin American Encounter held in Bogota (Colombia) in 1968, and became a reality at the Second Latin American Encounter of 1970 in Tlaxcala (Mexico), when the Latin American Group of Cursillo in Christianity – OLCC (now GLCC) was established.
In 1972, as part of a World Encounter, the European Working Group, GET, (now GECC) was created and held its first meeting in Mallorca later that year.
1973 there arose a need for an English-Speaking Group, IELG to facilitate communication and publication of the CM's own literature in this language. Countries of the IELG included United States, England, Ireland, Canada, Australia, Korea and Sri Lanka.
In 1983 countries encompassing Asia, Oceania and American Territories in the Pacific held their first meeting in Guam, and in 1990 they were officially recognised by the OMCC as the Asia Pacific Group (APG) In 1998 the IELG further divided into the North America/Caribbean Group (NACG)

The co-ordinating country for each International Group is elected by the National Secretariats within the Group every 4 years to co-incide with the election of the seat of the OMCC. The co-ordinating countries for the 2010-2013 term are:
- APG - Vietnam in Diaspora (Australia)
- GECC - Austria
- GLCC - Argentina
- NACG - United States of America
